Finnish Broadcaster MTV Media Transform its AVA Channel into a Dynamic, Graphics-rich, Social Media-Driven Experience
Astucemedia Data Platform and creative services integrate social media and online data with AVA live TV graphics for innovative “Let’s Create Together” interactive broadcast
Montréal, Québec, Canada, December 12, 2012 – Astucemedia—a Montreal-based provider of live broadcast graphics services and its innovative Astucemedia Data Platform for data integration—played a pivotal role in the relaunch and rebranding of the AVA lifestyle channel that reaches over one million households across Finland.
In August 2012, AVA relaunched as an innovative social media-driven channel that broadcasts “Let’s Create Together” (Luodaan yhdessä) themed programming geared to smart, influential Finnish women. AVA, a free-to-view cable channel based in Helsinki, Finland, is part of the MTV Media group that has been owned and operated by Bonnier AS, a multi-channel media conglomerate in Stockholm, Sweden, since 2005.
Astucemedia installed its Astucemedia Data Platform, which is the critical enabling technology behind AVA’s social media-driven operation. The AVA relaunch also features a fresh, contemporary graphics package—including channel bugs, live squeezes, promos, and branding and topic-of-the-week elements—and realtime, data-driven templates designed by Astucemedia’s creative services group.
Today, AVA viewers participate in the channel’s interactive broadcast experience by submitting their personal photos, Twitter tweets, Facebook likes and posts in response to weekly themes, such as my favorite shoes, a moment in a dog’s life, baking breads, and home decor. Viewers can also design and submit original logos for the channel, comment on TV shows, share recipes and stories, among other “created together” contributions that can enrich AVA’s live broadcasts or website, http://avatv.fi
“In light of the paradigm shift from an analog to a digital media world, we decided to relaunch AVA as a 21st Century channel that is shaped and influenced by content generated by the social media community,” said Tuomo Kulomaa, head of promotion for MTV Media, a division of Bonnier AS.
“We chose Astucemedia for this complex, challenging task because of their exceptional technical data expertise in the design and creation of live data-driven broadcast graphics as well as their unique solution for integrating and managing timely social media and online data within an existing live graphics workflow,” Kulomaa added.
The Astucemedia Data Platform is a modular, software solution that captures, manages, and feeds user generated content and live data streams from social media, websites, and data services. The platform feeds the data to live broadcast graphics systems as well as pushes broadcast content back to social media and online sites. Astucemedia also integrated its Astucemedia Data Platform with AVA’s What’s On traffic and Harris ADC automation systems to create a unified, interactive social media-driven broadcast workflow.
This extensive channel rebranding required Astucemedia to interface with the channel’s existing Orad broadcast graphics infrastructure, including the Orad 3Designer design software, 3Dplay graphics playout controller, and HDVG HD/SD rendering engine; however, Astucemedia can provide expertise, services, and solutions for all popular broadcast graphics platforms.
“Our Astucemedia Data Platform streamlines the data integration process and reduces operational overhead at broadcast facilities by automating wherever possible,” said Thomas Desmeules, director of research and development for Astucemedia, as well as on-site project manager for technical upgrades that were key to the successful AVA channel relaunch.
“The AVA staff can use the Astucemedia Data Platform to schedule weekly themes, promote select Twitter hash-tags and Facebook pages people should use, as well as review and modify viewer submissions for air,” said Desmeules. “Our data platform also filters voluminous tweets and posts to weed out inappropriate messages and highlight the best choices AVA staffers can air.”
According to MTV Media’s Kulomaa, “The Astucemedia team met and exceeded our expectations, provided on-site technical support, and delivered on all project objectives within a very tight [nine-week] timeframe.”
Desmeules added, “We’re extremely pleased that MTV Media and AVA entrusted us with the creation of this very forward-thinking, always-updating, viewer-driven lifestyle channel.”
