Astucemedia’s Data Platform enabled beIN Sports to deliver an innovative, super-fan focused channel—adjacent to the main Euro 2016 telecast—rich with live statistics, tweets, game analysis, replays and multiple camera views
Montréal, Québec, Canada, July 10th, 2016 —In addition to its live coverage of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament, beIN Sports—a PTV provider based in Paris—created a visually engaging secondary channel where avid football fans could turn to for live statistics about players and teams, game analysis, tweets, quizzes, replays and multiple camera views of game action.
The star of this enriched screen experience—called MatchCenter—was the Astucemedia Data Platform, a modular software solution that is uniquely capable of grabbing statistics streaming in from Opta —a leading real-time sports data service—and posts from Twitter, and automatically integrating that data for live broadcast graphics.
“MatchCenter set a new benchmark for spectacular live sports graphics, especially considering the high volume of statistics, tweets, images, logos, and other content that needed to automatically populate real-time graphics,” said Alexandre Leclerc, President of Astucemedia, in Montréal, Canada.
“Astucemedia’s Data Platform provided a reliable framework that enabled the master-control operators, journalists, statisticians and other production team members to easily manage the deluge of social media content and real-time statistics for integration in the broadcast,” Lionel added.
The UEFA Euro 2016 championship features over 50 matches—played by 24 European men’s national football teams—from June 10 through July 10, 2016. Throughout the month-long tournament, matches were played at 10 different stadiums across France..
Driven by expert football stats producers, MatchCenter features live player heat-map visualizations, live detailed statistics for players and teams, tactical formations, replays and multiple camera angles during the match. For social media integration, Astucemedia’s Data Platform helped aggregate the high volume of viewer tweets posted on #beINCENTER and facilitated Twitter quizzes, photos and highlights that were viewable on MatchCenter.
During the matches, viewers could switch to MatchCenter on an adjacent beIN Sports channel to get more information about the plays they were seeing. MatchCenter’s sports producers and statisticians personally selected gems of data they wanted to highlight in addition to allowing users to request stats directly via Twitter.
Astucemedia’s Data Platform captured live match & statistics data from Opta along with social media posts and integrated with purpose-built graphics & control templates, creating a visually dynamic second-screen style experience, on TV. The templates were designed for use with a Vizrt live graphics production workflow comprised of Viz Content Pilot and Viz Engine real-time video compositing engines. Astucemedia’s creative services department created the custom graphics based upon design concepts provided by beIN Sports.
As the UEFA Euro 2016 broadcast rights holder for France, beIN Sports broadcast the games live on beIN Sports 1 and MatchCenter on beIN Sports 2; however, if two matches were played simultaneously, the second match was broadcast live on beIN Sports 2 with MatchCenter on beIN Sports 3.
Astucemedia’s CTO Thomas Desmeules was on-site to support the launch of beIN Sports’ video production team, based in the broadcast control room, including the director, producer, control operator, social media moderator, slow-motion/replay operator and expert football stats journalist/producer.
“The social media response was phenomenal,” Desmeules said. “A flood of overwhelmingly positive tweets came in during the games, congratulating beIN Sports for what the fans were calling Football TV 2.0. MatchCenter brought the second-screen experience to the big-screen.”
“Throughout the month-long tournament,” he added, “Our data platform remained stable and reliable as it performed intensive Twitter moderation and all of the live, statistics-rich graphics generation needed for MatchCenter. We are very proud to have been part of this ground-breaking TV sports project.”
